Michigan Boating Guide - Personal Flotation Devices

When selecting a PFD, read the label to make sure it is for a person your size and weight. You also need to consider the type of boating and where you plan to do it. Try your PFD on to make sure it fits properly and check to make sure it is US Coast Guard approved.
How Many PFD's Do You Need? The US Coast Guard says you must have USCG approved PFDs on your recreational boat. How many and what type depends on the number of people on board, the size of your boat, and the kind of boating you do.
Under 16 Feet Long If your boat is less than 16 feet long or is a canoe or kayak, you may choose either wearable or throwable PFDs. But you must still have one PFD for each person on board.
16 Feet or Longer If your boat is 16 feet or longer, you must have one of any of these wearable PFDs for each person on board:

  1. Offshore Life Jackets (Type I PFD)
  2. Near-shore Bouyant Vest (Type II PFD)
  3. Flotation Aid (Type III PFD)
  4. Special Use or Hybrid Devices (Type V PFD)
  5. Plus at least one Throwable Device (Type IV PFD)
